Alberta Teachers' Association Labour Action Update #6 to Families

October 27, 2025

Dear Parents and Guardians,

The Government of Alberta has enacted legislation that directs all teachers back to work, ending the strike that was initiated by the Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA) on October 6, 2025. This means that classes for all Peace Wapiti Public School Division (PWPSD) students will resume on Wednesday, October 29.

I acknowledge the challenges the strike has created for your families and for everyone in our school communities. As educators, working with students to support their learning is at the core of what we do and who we are as individuals. For the last three weeks, our priority work has been disrupted and the challenge of that has been felt by everyone in our system. Despite the return to school being an act of legislation, the commitment PWPSD staff share to see our students succeed remains the focus of our work and we all look forward to welcoming students and staff back to class on October 29, 2025.

I appreciate the efforts of families to organize support for their children during the disruption. I am also grateful for the efforts of our non-instructional staff to prepare our schools for the return of students and teachers, and for their shared commitment to public education.

PWPSD continues to work closely with Alberta Education and Childcare, and more information will be shared about planning for future supports for students as it is developed. For the most up-to-date information, please monitor your email and refer to the PWPSD Alberta Teachers’ Association Labour Action webpage.

Premier Smith has provided the following letter to Alberta families.

A few reminders as we return to school:

  • The weather has changed since early October, so please ensure your child is dressed appropriately for cooler conditions.
  • If your child brought home any indoor shoes/gym attire/etc., please ensure they bring them to school on Wednesday.
  • Lunch programs may not be immediately available upon return. Your school will communicate further details once they have been sorted out.

I understand you may have school-specific questions. Please be patient as our staff return to their classrooms and navigate this ongoing situation.

Thank you again for your understanding during this time.
